Child Protective Services (CPS)'s mission is to ensure that children under 18 years of age are secure and that families are empowered in order to achieve protection, permanence, and well-being.
Child Abuse occurs when severe physical harm is inflicted by a parent or other legally responsible person, creates a considerable risk of serious physical injury, or sexually assaults the child.
If they allow someone else to do these things to the child, a person may be guilty of abusing a child.
Child abuse occurs when a parent or other legally liable person damages a child or puts a child in imminent danger of harm by failing to provide food, clothes, shelter, education, or medical treatment to the child when he or she can do so financially.
Reporting of alleged child abuse or maltreatment should be made by telephone to the New York Statewide Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (sometimes referred to as the State Central Registry or SCR) promptly at any time of the day and any day of the week.
If the information is necessary to record a report, the Child Protection Professional who answers your call will decide if it is necessary. You do NOT have to know the names, genders, or identities of anyone at home.
For an investigation of the complaint, the report is assigned to a Child Protective Service Worker in the county where the family lives.
You do not understand; the legislation requires that CPS function under very strict rules of confidentiality. You can file another report to the hotline if you think violence or neglect is still happening.
