Are social workers biased? Are they prejudice? Are they discriminating against you? Let me tell you this story. I was representing a grandmother who was from New York. She was of Jamaican descent and she would never recommend the children being placed in her home in New York. And so we had a trial. During the testimony, I asked her all the questions I could ask her, and she was giving all of the right answers. So finally, I was about to give up and I said to her, "Ms. So and So, what's the real reason why you don't want to place these children with my client in New York?" And she's feeling very confident at this point in time because she had given me all the right answers. And this was her response to my last question. "Well, we all know that all Jamaicans are drug dealers." My mouth dropped and hit the table. This county council didn't know what to do. He didn't know if he should say something or remain silent, but the judge, the judge just stood up and walked off the bench. Needless to say, the children were placed in my client's home in New York. I've had social workers tell me on the stand that they don't want to place with... this is one social worker... they don't want to place the child with my client because she's living in sin. She was living with a guy and they weren't married. I've had social workers intimate to my own clients, reasons why they don't like my clients and it ranges from, "Oh, you're Muslim" allegedly, to "You know, you're gay and I don't think children should be placed with you." So people are people all across the board. Everyone has prejudices, everyone has dislikes. Sometimes these creep into these cases and a lot of times it's hard to prove, but sometimes social workers just can't help themselves. I was involved in a case against a social worker and when I took her videotape deposition, she ended up admitting that she had filed things that were not true under penalty of perjury. Needless to say, that case went from them offering basically $10,000 to seven figures. You're probably watching this video because you have some of the same problems or the same questions.
