When your family gets involved with Child Protective Services (CPS), it's important to understand your rights and obligations. Child Protective Services has the role of keeping children safe from violence and neglect. Child abuse is harm or threat to the health or welfare of a child. That is not unintentional emotional or physical damage. Child neglect means either of the following or both:

• Not providing a child in your care with adequate food, clothes, housing, or medical care
• If you knew or could have known about the risk, placing a child at an unacceptable risk of harm might have prevented the child from harm and not

The CPS investigates violence and neglect by individuals, such as parents or guardians, who are responsible for the treatment of children. The police will investigate whether the person accused of harming a child is not a caregiver but someone like a teacher or religious official.

To prevent, recognize, and manage violence and neglect of children, CPS can collaborate with families, police, courts, and other agencies. CPS wants to continue to hold families together, as long as this is in the best interest of the kid.

Anyone who reasonably believes that a child is being abused or neglected, including a child, may report it to the CPS or police. If they had the same experience or heard the same evidence, a fair suspicion is one that another, impartial individual would also have.

Some individuals must disclose any fair assumption of child abuse or neglect, because of the occupations they have. These individuals are referred to as "mandatory reporters," and they include educators, social workers, and physicians. The identity of the individual reporting will usually remain confidential.
