Prepare for the First Hearing

Do's:

Don't be on schedule. The sooner, the better.
Do give proper notice when filing a court request. Meet the rules when mailing something or handing it over to the court.
Prepare a notebook or paper, keep organized everything that applies to your situation. Often keep notes that are healthy.

Bring extra copies of all important documents so you can hand them over to the judge and to the other side. It is generally a good rule of thumb to bring three copies of all important documents.

To ensure that all of your witnesses are going to attend and know the right location and time.
If you have a revoked license, plan on making someone else drive. Someone will note. Be sure to make all preparations well in advance of your hearing.
Over the course of your case keep the court aware of changes in your contact details. (When you switch your phone number or change it.)
Do call the office of the Clerk for updates or other details about your case. You will need to have ready your name and the name of the opponent and the case number. Don't specifically call the judge.

Don'ts:

Don't delay answering court notices-reply immediately.
Don't memorize answers to questions you expect to be asked. It will be showing and it looks abnormal. Maybe other people do not trust you. You can even forget what you meant to say.
Don't lie about something, not even white (small) lies. The judge will find it difficult to believe you when you say the truth if you are discovered to be lying. During your hearing, you might even be offered fines or other forms of discipline for lying.

Don't carry sharp metal things to the hearing with you. You're going to pass through a metal detector. Here's a sample list of items you should NOT bring:

Knives like a knife from the Swiss army or other items including guns
Needles To Crochet
SCISSORS
Aircraft
Illegal Drugs
Cell phones or cameras are not allowed by certain courts. Look up the court's cellphone rules.

Don't fax to Court records. You have to submit paperwork in person (ensure that you are submitting a receipt). You may even make someone else take them to the tribunal to file them. You can also, through the U.S. postal service, give the document to the clerk.
Do not ignore "interrogatories" (the other side's written lists of questions).
